Working and non-working computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, TV’s, VCR’s, DVD players, phones, audio/visual equipment, cell phones and PDA’s

This workshop will explain the rules of the NYC Recycling Program and help your parents avoid fines. Recycling is easy when you know the rules!

The Earth Day CLIMATE RALLY – National Mall – Sunday, April 25, 2010

The 40th anniversary of Earth Day is quickly approaching, but the United States has failed to enact a comprehensive climate bill.

It is time to stop protecting polluters and enact comprehensive climate legislation that will create American jobs, cap carbon emissions and secure our nation’s future. The first Earth Day was a success because 20 million Americans demonstrated their outrage for the state of the environment. Together, we can make Earth Day 2010 a pivotal moment in the environmental movement.

On Sunday, April 25, Earth Day Network will organize a massive climate rally on The National Mall to demand Congress pass strong legislation. The Climate Rally will include notable speakers Reverend Jesse Jackson, film director, James Cameron, AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka, Olympic gold medalist, Billy Demong, producer, Trudie Styler, author, Margaret Atwood, NFL player and television personality, Dhani Jones, environmental photographer Sebastian Copeland and many more.

The Climate Rally will also feature live music from Sting, John Legend, The Roots, Jimmy Cliff, Passion Pit, Bob Weir, Willie Colón, Joss Stone, Robert Randolph, Patrick Stump, Mavis Staples, Booker T,Honor Society and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

The Golden Apple Awards offers schools in NYC recognition for documenting their model school recycling programs, waste prevention initiatives, orbeautification projects.

The Golden Apple Awards consists of three contests. In each contest, schools compete against other schools within their grade division (elementary, intermediate, or high school) for borough and citywide honors.

2010 GOLDEN APPLE AWARDS INFORMATION

• 2010 deadline: Project Entry Binders must be received by 5pm Friday April 30, 2010.
• Registered schools: see Contest Submission Information (pdf).
• 2010 Prizes: Prizes change from year to year based on available funding; it is currently not expected that this year’s contests will issue cash awards. As before, winners will receive the following honors:
  • awards announced on our website and in press releases
  • award certificates (all entries receive Certificates of Participation)
  • binders are posted online as exemplary models to help other schools looking to do similar projects
  • gifts for the core group of students and staff who spearheaded the project
  • the NYC recycling character mascots are planning to attend Citywide Winners’ award ceremonies in June 2010 for photo ops with the kids!

A series of four community planning workshops for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, led by NYC Department of Transportation, begin Thursday, March 25th. These workshops will inform DOT’s master plan for constructing the greenway, so please mark your calendars and tell your neighbors.

The Department of City Planning is currently preparing Vision 2020: The NYC Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, and they want your help. This plan will establish the city’s long-range vision for a 21st Century waterfront, identifying opportunities for improvement and the strategies needed to realize this new vision.

You may be able to receive a cash rebate from the State Energy Program. Looking to buy a new “energy star” applicance?

Under the approved plan, the Great Appliance Swap Out program is expected to:

• Provide New York consumers who own their own appliances with rebates for purchasing certain energy-efficient refrigerators, clothes washers, freezers and dishwashers
• Offering a larger rebate to consumers who recycle their discarded appliance
